I took the day off from work. I didn’t have any real reason, I just didn’t feel like going in today. My thoughts today will be brief.
-The Nationals traded Livan Hernandez to the Arizona Diamondbacks for two minor league pitchers, right-hander Garrett Mock and left-hander Matt Chico.
Mock and Chico led the Diamondbacks’ minor league system in strikeouts this year, both pitching for Double-A Tennessee. Mock went 4-8 with a 4.95 ERA and 117 strikeouts in 23 starts, while Chico was 7-2 with a 2.22 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 13 starts. Arizona’s minor league systems was rated No. 1 In Organization Talent this year by Baseball America-Washington was No. 24!
Arizona will be getting a pitcher who is pitching his best ball of the season. Hernandez is unbeaten in his last eight starts, posting quality starts in seven of those outings. On Sunday, Hernandez allowed two runs in seven innings but got a no-decision in San Diego’s 3-2 victory. Arizona definitely needs the pitching help and Washington needs all the minor league talent they can get.
– No television coverage for the Baltimore-Toronto game today. However, XM Radio comes through in the clutch. Russ Ortiz got the start for the O’s replacing Erik Bedard, whose start was pushed back to Wednesday. Ortiz struggled again, lasting only 3-plus innings allowing six runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out none. Ortiz’ gave up two longballs, a two-run shot to Lyle Overbay and a three-run home to Vernon Wells, whose 27th dinger gave Toronto a 6-1 lead and chased Ortiz from the game. Ortiz seems to headed to an 0-8 mark. Just three years ago, Ortiz was a 20-game winner for the Atlanta Braves. I don’t know how much longer the O’s can hang onto him.
There’s a lot of good games tonight. I have a key fantasy matchup this week that would help me inch closer to the playoffs with a victory. I’m not sure it’ll happen, I’ve been the poster child of inconsistency. We’ll see how it goes!
